{"id":242,"date":"2008-08-03T02:46:36","date_gmt":"2008-08-03T09:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/archives\/242"},"modified":"2008-08-03T02:50:52","modified_gmt":"2008-08-03T09:50:52","slug":"things-i-saw-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/2008\/08\/things-i-saw-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Things I saw today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/gfinch2.jpg\" alt=\"American Goldfinch at my feeder\" class=\"floatleft\" \/><em class=\"b\">The goldfinches are back! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>A pair of these cute little birds <em>(Washington&#8217;s state bird, come to find out)<\/em> found my feeder in the spring and I was so delighted by their vibrant yellow color and beautiful song.\u00c2\u00a0 But they sort of disappeared during June and July &#8211; so I was excited to see a whole family of them today.\u00c2\u00a0 I actually heard them before I saw them.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Listen&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><embed flashvars=\"valid_sample_rate=true&amp;external_url=http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/files\/goldfinch.mp3\" wmode=\"transparent\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" quality=\"high\" height=\"40\" width=\"180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.odeo.com\/flash\/audio_player_standard_gray.swf\" pluginspage=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/go\/getflashplayer\"><\/embed><\/p>\n<p>I decided to explore a nearby empty\u00c2\u00a0field\/wooded lot\u00c2\u00a0that backs onto a wetlands park, just to see if there was anything interesting\u00c2\u00a0<em>(before someone sells and builds on it)<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A few pines and maples, a couple of apple trees, lots of wild blackberries, scotchbroom, yarrow and\u00c2\u00a0and such&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 even some wild pink roses climing over a tree.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But the pink that really caught my attention was the <em class=\"b\">wild sweet peas<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 They are everywhere right now.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sweetpea1.jpg\" alt=\"Sweetpeas\" class=\"floatright\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><\/div>\n<p>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\nAs I came to a clearing near the edge of the wetlands, I a hawk started crying out. I could see him way at the top of a tall pine&#8230;. he kept up the noise &#8211; I don&#8217;t think he liked me wandering back there, because he made a big swoop around the field, circling me (staying up high) and landing back in the tree.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/hawk.jpg\" alt=\"Hawk\" height=\"154\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 154px\" class=\"floatright\" \/>I tried to catch a good picture of him in flight but they were all a bit blurry. He sat there yelling at me some more, and then made another cirlce around, so I decided to leave him in peace&#8230;. and as I left his view, he was quiet again. It&#8217;s not lilke I was going to grab his lunch or anything&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s what I saw today.\u00c2\u00a0 You?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The goldfinches are back!
