{"id":271,"date":"2008-09-08T01:49:23","date_gmt":"2008-09-08T08:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/archives\/271"},"modified":"2008-09-08T01:53:18","modified_gmt":"2008-09-08T08:53:18","slug":"shorts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/shorts\/","title":{"rendered":"Shorts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the early 80s, Kristin and I were watching HBO and happened upon one of the most memorable films of our lives.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a brief, animated short film which had won the 1982 Student Academy Award.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ursula.jpg\" alt=\"Ursula\" class=\"floatleft\" \/>It was called &#8220;<strong>Guess Who&#8217;s For Dinner<\/strong>&#8221; and in it, a\u00c2\u00a0spinach monster attacks a child during dinner.\u00c2\u00a0 It was hysterical and after 25 years is still a clear image in my head. Kristin and I have both spent hours over the years, searching for this in any form&#8230; if you stumble upon it, let us know!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The talented animator, <a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0956199\/\">Kathy Zielinski<\/a> has gone on to career with Disney and animated the memorable character Ursula (the witch) in the Little Mermaid, in addition to others.<\/p>\n<div id=\"boxright\"><object width=\"275\" height=\"220\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZpBkc2jK-6w&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZpBkc2jK-6w&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"275\" height=\"220\"><\/embed><\/object><\/div>\n<p>And then, of course, there were the midnight short film festivals at the Villa theatre where I saw some memorable, and not so memorable animated shorts. <em>Who could forget&#8230; <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em class=\"b\"><font size=\"3\">Bambi vs. Godzilla?<\/font><\/em>  <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been a fan of short films ever since. So I was delighted to find I can get the academy award nominated shorts for 2004 &#8211; 2007.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I got 2006 first <em>(because that&#8217;s the one I noticed first)<\/em> and watched them last night.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 What a delightful evening.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Some were better than others, of course &#8211; but I enjoyed all of them but one.<\/p>\n<p>I think my favorite live action short was\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em class=\"b\">\u00c3\u00a9ramos pocos<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (spain).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Mom has left her slob of a husband and grown son, who are helpless without her. They liberate Gran from a nursing home to cook and clean for them.\u00c2\u00a0 Fun, with a twist.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"b\"><a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westbankstory.com\/\">West Bank Story<\/a><\/em> is a love story and rivalry between Israelis and Palestinians and their fast food joints.\u00c2\u00a0 Made by students at USC, it actually was a musical &#8211; and won the Oscar.\u00c2\u00a0 It was fun.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"174\" src=\"http:\/\/www.classical963fm.com\/files\/images\/2007-01-26_danishpoet-r.jpg\" height=\"169\" style=\"width: 174px; height: 169px\" class=\"floatleft\" \/>My favorite animated short was <a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iTef0HWbW_M\"><em class=\"b\">The Danish Poet<\/em><\/a>&#8221; (Canada-Norway)\u00c2\u00a0&#8211; which did win the Academy Award.\u00c2\u00a0 Simple line drawings and a sweet story.
