{"id":4,"date":"2007-08-19T15:43:53","date_gmt":"2007-08-19T22:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/archives\/4"},"modified":"2007-08-21T00:09:45","modified_gmt":"2007-08-21T07:09:45","slug":"whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/2007\/08\/whats-in-a-name\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s in a name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So,\u00c2\u00a0this is the first post on my new blog.\u00c2\u00a0 You may be wondering why I chose the name &#8220;<strong>Silence of the Clams<\/strong>&#8221; for a blog&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 since this is not a site about seafood, or the sea <em>(though I do have a fondness for tropical fish)<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The more interesting (or not) question is why I am blogging at all.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a relatively short story, but chances are I&#8217;ll babble on and make it much longer than needs be.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Basically, I&#8217;m a computer nerd.\u00c2\u00a0 I come from a family of computer nerds, or geeks, or whatever you want to call us.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, we&#8217;re all pretty darn cool &#8211; not the typical nerd you may think of when you picture one.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But nearly all of us make our livings with a computer one way or another:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00c2\u00a0<em>My brother<\/em>, <strong>Jeston <\/strong>&#8211; computer programmer.\u00c2\u00a0 I think his specialty is databases, but he is the all-knowing oracle at AT&amp;T\/Cingular\/AT&amp;T.\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><em>My sister<\/em>, <strong>Kristin<\/strong> &#8211; She actually LIKES making charts and graphs.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 They make her happy.\u00c2\u00a0 She also does some web design, video editing, and makes a killer powerpoint&#8230; she takes the time to figure out all the stuff that I have no patience for<\/li>\n<li><em>My son<\/em>, <strong>Brandon<\/strong> &#8211; programmer, web designer and entrepreneur.\u00c2\u00a0 If you know any music teachers, have them check out <a target=\"resource_window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.musicteachershelper.com\/allicat.afl\">Music Teachers Helper!<\/a><\/li>\n<li><em>My daughter<\/em>, <strong>Ashley <\/strong>&#8211; As an ASL Interpreter and legal secretary&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0 she&#8217;s the least geeky among us, though she definitely has the gene : )<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>See, this is getting long&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 are you still with me?\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m getting to the point, really, I am&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Then there&#8217;s me<\/strong> &#8211; part time web and graphic designer, part-time virtual assistant, and professional photographer wannabe.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The point is, here we all are&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 tied with umbilical cords to our computers, and none of us has a blog.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So when my dear friend, Michelle, who is decidedly non-technical, started her <a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/firstseatfirstrow.blogspot.com\/\">own blog<\/a> and encouraged me to do the same, I decided it really was time to join in the fun. That was in June.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than just start a blog like most people would (including my brother-in-law, Craig&#8230; Kristin got a very nice <a target=\"resource_window\" href=\"http:\/\/craigthegrey.com\/blog\">blog<\/a> up for him within a couple of weeks!), I agonized for <em>weeks <\/em>over what name to choose, what design it should have, blah blah blah. I couldn&#8217;t bear to begin til I knew what it would be in the end&#8230;. and once I decided I then had to make sure it looked pretty, everything working as I want (which it isn&#8217;t yet, by they way)&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 <em>someone just shoot me and put me out of my own misery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And now to the point of this essay<\/strong>&#8230;..\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 the name.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, a few years ago Kristin and I spent a night looking up potential domain\u00c2\u00a0 names for some reason or another, and we got silly.\u00c2\u00a0 Looked up things like &#8220;HopOnPop.com&#8221; or &#8220;SlitheryDee.com&#8221; <em>(both taken, btw)<\/em>, and I came up with SilenceOfTheClams.\u00c2\u00a0 For some reason (perhaps the late hour??)
