{"id":407,"date":"2009-02-07T19:11:55","date_gmt":"2009-02-08T02:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/archives\/407"},"modified":"2009-02-07T21:22:09","modified_gmt":"2009-02-08T04:22:09","slug":"how-am-i-doing-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/how-am-i-doing-it\/","title":{"rendered":"How am I doing it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, on my 25 Random Things list I shared that I had lost 49 lbs since August 15th.\u00c2\u00a0 <em class=\"b\">Make that 54 lbs <\/em>as of today.\u00c2\u00a0 Several of you asked how I&#8217;m doing it &#8211; so here is your answer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/scales-feet.jpg\" alt=\"scales-feet.jpg\" class=\"floatleft\" \/>I was\u00c2\u00a0lean as a teenager&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0 but, everything changed with my first pregnancy.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 My weight has been up and down a lot over the years &#8211; far more up than down the past\u00c2\u00a010.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 And at 47 was finding that nothing was working&#8230; didn&#8217;t matter how little I ate, how active I was,\u00c2\u00a0I just wasn&#8217;t seeing results.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I <em>felt <\/em>better when I went on regular walks, went to <a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.curves.com\/\">Curves<\/a> 3 times a week, and watched what I ate &#8211; but I wasn&#8217;t losing any weight.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 In fact, I had <em class=\"b\">vowed to never &#8220;diet&#8221; again <\/em>&#8211; since it seems like every time I do, I lose weight, but then gain it back plus more.\u00c2\u00a0 My doctor suggested I look at the <a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lapband.com\/\">Lapband<\/a> <em>(it had worked for her)<\/em>, but I wasn&#8217;t prepared to consider a surgical option.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, I was made aware of this\u00c2\u00a0weight\u00c2\u00a0loss protocol &#8211; and\u00c2\u00a0was <em class=\"b\">completely resistant <\/em>to it at first. But I started researching it and (even though I had vowed I wasn&#8217;t going to tell anyone, in case it didn&#8217;t work), I enlisted the help of my sister &#8211; who was also looking for alternatives to shed some weight. <em>Honestly, she did most of the research <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/images\/smiley.gif\" \/><\/em> Kristin and I both decided it was the best option we had. So I found a local naturopath who offered it, we made an appointment and jumped in.<\/p>\n<h4>hCG Protocol by Dr. Albert Simeons\u00c2\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s not for the faint of heart, though it is the simplest, <em class=\"b\">most effective way I&#8217;ve found<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0There are naysayers who claim it doesn&#8217;t work&#8230; but I and many others are living proof it does.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>And, frankly,\u00c2\u00a0 if you have a negative view of the hCG diet, I&#8217;d prefer you keep it to yourself.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sharing this information to recruit others to try this &#8211; just to share what is working for me, because I was asked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is more detailed than this, but here is a <em class=\"b\">general overview <\/em>of what I do&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 <em>(Phase 1 was invented by Kevin Trudeau &#8211; I don&#8217;t use it)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 2\u00c2\u00a0 (VCL &#8211; reduction)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em class=\"b\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/syringe.jpg\" alt=\"I inject myself with hCG\" class=\"floatright\" \/>Daily injection of hCG <\/em>(human chorionic gonadotropin)\u00c2\u00a0for a minimum of 23 days (yes, I inject myself).\u00c2\u00a0 It can also be taken sublingually, but\u00c2\u00a0for me it is too much\u00c2\u00a0work to mix it up and take it more than once a day.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>VCL &#8211; <em class=\"b\">very low calorie, very restricted diet <\/em>(500 calories per day with no sugars, fats or starches).\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0The good news is, the hCG seems to prevent cravings, sugar withdrawal headaches or hunger.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Unbelievable, but true!<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/meal.jpg\" title=\"A typical P2 meal\" class=\"floatright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/meal.jpg\" alt=\"A typical P2 meal\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a><em class=\"b\">This is what I had for lunch today<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 My daily diet consists of tea for breakfast, and two meals containing 3.5oz chicken breast or lean beef, and either celery, cucumber, romaine, spinach\u00c2\u00a0or onion.\u00c2\u00a0 An occasional apple,\u00c2\u00a0orange or handful of strawberries.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A protein drink sometimes.\u00c2\u00a0 Like I said, very limited choices&#8230;. it gets really boring, but I&#8217;m rarely hungry.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, and I have to <em class=\"b\">drink lots of water<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em class=\"b\">How does it work, you ask? <\/em>It&#8217;s a bit more complex than this, but a simple explanation is the <em class=\"b\">hCG fools my body into releasing 2,000 &#8211; 3,000 calories daily<\/em> of the hard-to-access abnormal fat.\u00c2\u00a0 My average loss per day while on this phase is 0.7 lbs &#8211; and the composition change in my body is pretty amazing.<\/p>\n<p>6&#8243; off my chest (all from the back), 7.5&#8243; off both my belly and my hips. <em class=\"b\">70&#8243; lost overall<\/em>, from 16 different measurements. With results like that, it&#8217;s easy to stick with the boring food.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 3\u00c2\u00a0 (stabilization &#8211; resetting my set point)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This lasts a <em class=\"b\">minimum of 3 weeks<\/em>, and is the most challenging part, because we have to maintain &#8211; within 2 lbs up or down, our LIW <em>(last injection weight)<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If we gain more than 2 lbs, we need to do a &#8220;steak day&#8221; &#8211; where all we eat is a steak and an apple.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dairygoodness.ca\/NR\/rdonlyres\/957B556D-0A63-41EB-AF97-23B56FC275FB\/0\/havarti.jpg\" class=\"floatright\" \/>I <em class=\"b\">love Phase 3<\/em>, because I get to eat <em class=\"b\">cheese<\/em>!\u00c2\u00a0 And mayo, butter, olive oil and nuts&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0 and pretty much any vegetable I want&#8230;. and many more fruits.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I typically have a cream cheese muffin (made with cream cheese, eggs, <a target=\"resource window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.xylitol.org\/\">xylitol<\/a> instead of sugar, and cinnamon) for breakfast every day. <em>Yum.<\/em> Found a fabulous recipe for a <em class=\"b\">chocolate torte <\/em>made with almond flour. Can eat basically anything I want, as long as it isn&#8217;t starch or sugar.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s actually <em class=\"b\">the most important phase<\/em>, because it&#8217;s where the body is trained to recognize the new weight as normal.\u00c2\u00a0 It can be challenging to figure out how much to eat to maintain &#8211; not gain, not lose &#8211; because it is different for everyone, and <em class=\"b\">everyone&#8217;s body responds differently<\/em> to new foods as they are introduced.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Last P3, my ideal calorie intake was around 2100.<br \/>\n\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>During this phase I try to eat\u00c2\u00a010% carbs, 25% protein, and 65% fat.\u00c2\u00a0 I eat a lot of chicken salad, and cheese, and taco salads.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I would be lost without\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fitday.com\/\">fitday.com<\/a>, which I use\u00c2\u00a0to track all this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this point, I can go back into another Phase 2, or move to Phase 4.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phase 4 (maintenance)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After weight has become stable, we <em class=\"b\">gradually start adding starches <\/em>&#8211; rice, potato, beans, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 Basically transition into eating &#8220;normally&#8221; &#8211; though hopefully with better habits than before. I was on Phase 4 all of December and maintained pretty well til the last couple of weeks&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0 all that sugary wassail and caramels did me in and I gained about\u00c2\u00a07 lbs back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m feeling and looking much better, feeling healthier, stronger and I have more energy.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m <em class=\"b\">eating lots more fresh, natural, &#8220;real&#8221; foods<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 The only negative side effect I&#8217;ve experiences is that my <em class=\"b\">hair fell out <\/em>in handfuls\u00c2\u00a0all during December, so it&#8217;s much thinner than I&#8217;m used to &#8211; but not noticeable to most people.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s finally stopped\u00c2\u00a0doing that and I can see new growth of about 1&#8243; long.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/mer3.jpg\" alt=\"Me - after 54 lbs lost\" height=\"287\" class=\"floatleft\" \/>I&#8217;m not quite ready to post a fully body pic <em>(maybe I will from my upcoming trip to Kauai) <\/em>, but for those of you who have seen me in the past 5 -8 years, you should notice a change in this picture.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve released 54 lbs of fat, and I&#8217;m almost half way to my ultimate goal &#8211; so I&#8217;m not sure how many rounds it will take.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m <em class=\"b\">just finishing up my 3rd round of P2<\/em>, and really looking forward to eating cheese and mayo again on Wednesday!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kristin and I will be on P3 until we leave for Hawaii March 8th, and eat P3\/P4 while there&#8230; and start back into another P2 as soon as we get back.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"b\">So that&#8217;s how I&#8217;m doing it.<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 As I mentioned, this is not for everyone, but it is working well for me.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Some important things I&#8217;ve learned&#8230; <em class=\"b\">having an\u00c2\u00a0hCG\u00c2\u00a0buddy has been IMMENSELY helpful <\/em>for support, encouragement, cheerleading. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m so glad Kristin is doing this as well. We even successfully stayed on P2 during our <a href=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/archives\/337\">trip through the peninsula<\/a> last fall.
