{"id":54,"date":"2007-10-22T21:13:46","date_gmt":"2007-10-23T04:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/archives\/54"},"modified":"2007-10-24T14:13:22","modified_gmt":"2007-10-24T21:13:22","slug":"butchart-gardens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/butchart-gardens\/","title":{"rendered":"Butchart Gardens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"275\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bg1.jpg\" alt=\"Butchart Gardens\" title=\"Butchart Gardens\" class=\"floatleft\" \/>In a word:\u00c2\u00a0 <em class=\"b\">Spectacular<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In another word:\u00c2\u00a0 <em class=\"b\">Stunning<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A few more words&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0colorful, beautiful, rainy, misty, gorgeous, tasty, charming, friendly, delightful, funny <em>(or maybe that was just the company).<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Day 3 of our Girls Weekend, we spent <em>3 heavenly hours<\/em> wandering the paths of the gardens, pausing to take photos &#8211; which was sometimes a bit of a production in the rain.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And\u00c2\u00a0my dear friends never complained about my pain-in-the-butt camera bag on wheels.\u00c2\u00a0 They even offered to pull it around for me.\u00c2\u00a0 True friends.<\/p>\n<p>We were lucky enough to visit on a day with minimal crowds, due, in part I&#8217;m sure, to the rain.\u00c2\u00a0 But the overcast skies and light rain really brought out the colors of the garden.\u00c2\u00a0 Our first glimpse of the Sunken Garden (above) drew gasps.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It was literally aflame with color &#8211; and the misty trees provided the perfect backdrop.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip #1:<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 When visiting Butchart Gardens, <em class=\"b\">don&#8217;t bother to bring an umbrella <\/em>even if you KNOW it is going to rain.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"left\" width=\"102\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_3481.JPG\" hspace=\"8\" alt=\"Michelle &amp; her blue umbrella\" height=\"94\" style=\"width: 102px; height: 94px\" title=\"Michelle &amp; her blue umbrella\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_3483.JPG\" hspace=\"8\" alt=\"Chris &amp; Allison with lovely CLEAR umbrellas\" title=\"Chris &amp; Allison with lovely CLEAR umbrellas\" \/>We finally persuaded Michelle to swap out her functional and yet obstructive blue umbrella in favor of the &#8220;oh, what a great idea&#8221; <em><strong>clear<\/strong><\/em> umbrellas provided at various locations all around the garden.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whoever came up with that idea should get a bonus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip #2.<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 <em class=\"b\">Wear a waterproof jacket <\/em>rather than one that soaks up the rain like a dishrag;\u00c2\u00a0 especially if you find yourself sans umbrella, hauling around a camera in one hand and pulling a camera bag in the other.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"10\" align=\"right\" width=\"164\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/butchart07_049_sm.jpg\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"Photo shoot under umbrellas\" height=\"105\" style=\"width: 164px; height: 105px\" title=\"Photo shoot under umbrellas\" \/>Otherwise you might look and feel a bit like\u00c2\u00a0a drown cat.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And bring good natured friends who are willing to hold their umbrellas over you and your camera when you take photos.<\/p>\n<p>There was an entire wall of dahlias, winding paths under golden\u00c2\u00a0and crimson trees, waterfalls, ponds,\u00c2\u00a0statues, and\u00c2\u00a0ivy covered arbors, which I imagine would be full of rose or clematis blossoms in other seasons.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/but_bar.jpg\" hspace=\"10\" alt=\"Garden images\" title=\"Garden images\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" vspace=\"2\" align=\"left\" width=\"65\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/gardenladywontmove.jpg\" hspace=\"8\" alt=\"The lady who wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t move\" height=\"113\" style=\"width: 65px; height: 113px\" title=\"The lady who wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t move\" \/>At one point there was a path with several arbors, making for a nice photo opportunity.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Some woman kept standing right next to the first arbor, staring off into space.\u00c2\u00a0 We waited and waited for her to move so we could photo the path &#8211; but she just stood there.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So I took her photo.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0She reminded me a bit of Audrey Hadley.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese Garden was a group favorite, and where we decided to monopolize a cute bridge to take a group photo.\u00c2\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/grinch.jpg\" alt=\"Nothing says Butchart Gardens like the Grinch\" \/>I pulled out the tripod and we posed\u00c2\u00a0for a good 10 minutes trying to get a good shot of all of us, which was a bit of a challenge.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I was having issues with my damp red shirt clinging in all the wrong places and an ill-advised recent haircut.\u00c2\u00a0 Kristin wanted to take off her jacket, but realized she was wearing a &#8220;Grinch&#8221; sweatshirt underneath.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 One of the Hunsaker sisters noted, &#8220;<em class=\"b\">Nothing says Butchart Gardens like the Grinch<\/em>.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<em> (They kept us in stitches with their witty one liners).<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/butchart07_119bs2.jpg\" alt=\"Chris, Michelle, Allison &amp; Kristin on a bridge in the Japanese Garden\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notice that while Kristin and I look a bit damp and bedraggled, Chris looks ever stylish\u00c2\u00a0 in her coat and red scarf and Michelle is a complete fashionista &#8211; even her hair is fluffed and in place!\u00c2\u00a0 How did she do that???\u00c2\u00a0 <em>(Maybe by staying under an umbrella when it rained? <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"textTop\" width=\"15\" src=\"http:\/\/greyhavens.org\/myfamily\/smiley.gif\" height=\"15\" style=\"width: 15px; height: 15px\" \/>)<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/teapot_sm.jpg\" alt=\"Afternoon Tea at Butchart Gardens\" class=\"floatleft\" \/>We finished off our day in the garden with our first &#8220;<em class=\"b\">Afternoon Tea<\/em>&#8221; experience.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The charming dining room was surrounded by windows looking out onto a lovely garden, and the fire in the fireplace added just the right warmth and coziness we needed on a rainy day.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.butchartgardens.com\/images\/stories\/PDF\/afternoon_tea.pdf\" title=\"Afternoon Tea Menu\">Click here to see the menu<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michelle ordered a peppermint tea, not on the menu &#8211; and the rest of us all went for the TeaBerry blend.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Excellent choice<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Tea was a forbidden drink as I was growing up and something I always assumed would taste yucky.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But as an adult, I have found I love good tea&#8230;.\u00c2\u00a0 and this blend was exceptional.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/silenceoftheclams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/desserts.jpg\" alt=\"Dessert Tray\" \/>Finger sandwiches and desserts covered 3-tiered serving trays.
