Wildlife

This sleek lizard looked pretty cool poised on his leaf.

Lizard

And on every one of my last four trips to Kauai I have tried to capture a good photo of these adorable cardinals. They are SOOO cute, make us very happy each time they appear – and they always show up in pairs. Always. Today, I finally got my first good pic of the Red-Crested Cardinal.

Red Crested Cardinal - Kauai

MustafaAnd why did I even bother to bring a hair straightener?

I should have known that 15 minutes in Kauai would turn my once sleek hair into an unmanageable lions mane.

Just call me Mufasa (Ashley did…)

I’m exhausted… so more tomorrow.

Be sure to check out Kristin’s blog for details of our lei making.

  1. Looks like you are {were? are you back?} having a great time! Your pictures are always breathtaking, and that one with the lizard is my favorite!

Your hair, by the way, is exactly what mine would look like if I were there too. 🙂

  2. Mufasa, you look great, even with the untamable mane! And the bird and lizard pics are AMAZING, they look straight out of a calendar.

  3. I know what you mean about the birds being in pairs, I saw them in Honolulu.

    Your hair looks gorgeous….lol.

  4. glad you’re all having a great time. Thanks for all the pictures, since I’m so freaked out about flying, I’ll probably never go.

  5. The bird in Kennedy’s words : Freakin awesome! This little girl makes me laugh so much I need to wear depends when I visit her!

  6. I’m hoping to procure some valium for Paul’s apple juice and he’ll think we are going on a nice long road trip for our trip to someplace tropical. Don’t anybody let on…

love the vicarious vacation you are taking us on Allison.

  7. I can completely understand the lion mane as you can probably imagine. I finally just decided to give up completely on my hair after a while in Panama, especially in Bocas with 80% humidity.

I absolutely love the lizard and bird photos. You are so talented!!

  8. Paul, I understand the fear of flying. I have it big time. In the 80s when I was in the Air Force, I had to pick up the pieces of two men blown to bits in an F-16 crash in northern Spain. It took a week and we only recovered 88% of them. From that point on, I’ve been terrified of flying.

However, I had business to attend to in South American this year. I needed to go to Colombia 3 times actually, and each time I had to logically tell myself that for every plane that crashes (at about once a year), there are thousands each day that make it with no problem. That would tens or hundreds of thousands of flights with no problems. The chances of it happening are so very slim. So, that is how I got through it. But I’m always so glad when the plane touches down….

And now that I’m done with my escapades down there, I don’t see myself getting on another one for a very long time..

  9. I love your pictures! Your hair does look rather “exotic”. You look terrific by the way. I think I might have found the weight that you lost Allison. I know you don’t want it back so I may be stuck with it.
Craig, Valium is a great idea for Paul. Robert, I can’t imagine what a harrowing experience it must have been for you to be involved in a recovery operation like that. Wow! I’m not afraid to fly I just wish I could go first class.

  10. I really adore your pictures, and especially the beautiful shot of the cardinal. I saw it myself for the first time only a week ago, when I was holidaying together with my family on Maui. I was not so lucky to get a shot like this, though… 😉
Now I am wondering if you maybe would let me use your picture as a reference to a painting of this bird? You can see my paintings at http://www.jennymoedkorpela.com. Please send me an answer through the ‘contact me’ on that site if you are willing to let me use it as a reference. However, if you are not, just ignore this request! Have a wonderful 2012, Jenny

  11. Yes, Jenny, I’d be honored if you’d create a painting referencing my darling cardinal. Your paintings are beautiful. I’d love to see your finished piece!
