Talking Heads

Does anyone besides me want to slap the so-called “analysts” on the cable news networks upside the head?

I’ve been watching much of the Democratic National Convention this week and am thoroughly disgusted by the truly deranged commentary.    Rather than journalism, they are all about creating conflict and drama – even if it isn’t there.

The MSNBC team turned into mind readers…  especially Pat Buchanan who apparently knows Hillary better than she knows herself.    He told us what Hillary was really thinking while giving her speech – and the journatlists who should KNOW BETTER did the same, or asking everyone they interviewed to take a shot at reading her mind.  Never mind what she actually SAID in her speech – they know better what she’s thinking.

And Fox is the worst of them.  I was swtiching through all of the news channels to get a feel for the coverage after the speeches, and was shocked by the nonsense I heard there.  Were they watching the same speeches?????

If FOX news would come out and admit it they are simply a mouth piece for the GOP I could accept that – but their ABSURD moniker of being “Fair and Balanced” makes me want to throw up. Or take a gun and shoot myself.  No, take it to the studio and shoot all of them.

Anyone who would hire Karl Rove (evil incarnate) to be a news analyst should be shot.  OK, maybe I’m taking that too far.  Should be sent to an assylum for the truly deluded and deranged.  But Karl Rove should be shot, or imprisoned and tortured for all his crimes he’ll never pay for on this earth. It never ceases to amaze me how many people turn off their brains and believe the partisan crap on this not-news station.  I can only figure they like hearing stuff that feeds into their existing world veiw – rather than the way things are.

What has happened to real, objective journalism???

Thank heaven for PBS and C-SPAN.   I watched Bill’s speech last night (which was incredible, by the way) on CSPAN – and when I turned to PBS afterward, I heard intelligent analysis without all the invented drama.

Jon Stewart - one of the most trusted journalists in america> At this point, the only news sources I really trust are NPR and PBS. And of course Jon Stewart (<a target=Frankly, the only sources I trust for news are NPR and PBS – and of course Jon Stewart (one of the most trusted journalists in America, by the way) thrown in for a comedic take.  Viewers of his “fake” news show actually get more accurate information than on those who watch Fox).

Who do you think are the worst (or best) journalists/analysts and commentators?

  1. Allison…. Pat Buchanan is just a prick that nobody should ever listen to. He is a Nazi in Republican clothing.

I believe Barak Obama sealed the presidency tonight – for any of you who saw his acceptance speech – you know what I mean. It was not just a political event, but a spiritual experience. He is going to win. McCain is not his equal and cannot match what the country just experienced…

  2. I LOVED his speech. It was incredible. And he WROTE IT HIMSELF. This man just HAS to be our next president. HAS to be!

Anyone reading – if you missed the speech you really must watch it before you vote. Yes – even my Republican family and friends… you too! Please watch it. The whole thing is good – but it gets incredible the last 15 – 20 minutes.

  3. Last night after Bill’s speech some idiot talking head on MSNBC noted that Bill and Hillary had done their public duty. Then he declared that he KNOWS they will privately vote for McCain. Oh, please!

I watched MSNBC the most because I wasn’t home to see it on PBS each night but MSNBC repeated their coverage. I was extremely frustrated with the talking over the real action. I love Olbermann and I like Maddow and Matthews, but I got sick of all of them regurgitating what we’d just seen or speculating on what we were about to see.

  4. I have often wondered why they feel they have to analyze what we just heard/saw.. The act as though we have no ears and not one brain cell !!

I watched the entire Democratic convention (being retired has its advantages) and plan to watch the entire republican convention as well . I am still undecided.

  5. Pat B. is an ass, period. Why is he even allowed to be on TV spouting his opinion??? And Fox is completely biased, they are a joke to everyone but conservatives(republicans). I loved Obama’s speech, I loved how humble he was, how inspired he makes everyone, and that he wrote it himself. At one point I looked at Mike and said “Man, won’t it be nice to have a president we are proud of that you don’t cringe every time he opens his mouth wondering what stupid mispronunciation or ridiculous theory is going to come out”.
What a change if we had an actual intelligent thinker in there, c’mon Obama!

  6. Well there is no way McCain can top the Obama speech. He doesn’t have it when it comes to the gift of dynamic public speaking. Nor will they have a finale like the Dems pulled off. If they rented a stadium, they couldn’t fill it 1/2 full – I’d bet on it.

Now he has undermined his own main argument against Obama. According to him, Obama hasn’t had enough foreign policy experience to be president (even though he has exactly the same amount Lincoln had, and as much as some others as well)…. But McCain goes and picks a vice-presidential candidate nobody’s ever heard of, and has zilch foreign policy experience. So, for a man as old as he is, who has had cancer 4 times… he chooses someone who very well could have to step in and become president who is not qualified for the job… What does that say about his criticism of Obama, who does have foreign policy experience????

He’s not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree…

Another thing I’ve noticed.. On the Dem side, we’ve had Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Bill Clinton who were all great orators… Gore is pretty darn good too when he gets worked up. Even Carter at the 2004 convention gave the best speech… Obama comes along, and I believe he will top them all.

On the Republican side, who inspires? Reagan was a gifted speaker, I’ll give him that, but he was nowhere as good as Kennedy or Clinton, nor will he compare to Obama. Other than that, they haven’t run anyone who has won who can complete a sentence, and the guy they are running now doesn’t think before he talks…

Then if you want to discuss how each has conducted themselves as ex-presidents…. again, the Dems go out and do good in the world, while the Republicans give speeches and charge outlandish fees for it..

Even the Democratic first ladies… all did SOMETHING. Jacqueline Kennedy, Rosalynn Carter, Hillary…. they all moved outside the traditional role and accomplished things..

Betty Ford is the only one on the other side who did any kind of noticeable work after her husband was out of office..

There’s something to all that.. and I think it has to do with much of the message of the speeches at the Democratic convention. The ‘we are our brother’s keeper’ theme would be a belief that causes people to get into public service for the good of others.

On the other side, they really do believe that everyone is on their own. They would get rid of social security, Medicare/Medicaid, unemployment, etc. They fought all those programs. They still would get rid of them if they could. The privatization scheme was just a way to end it without looking like they were ending it.

When Gore said the Republican party has been controlled by big oil for 3 decades, that is a fact. It is the part of special interests.

And you can tell from the spirit of the conventions.

  7. One other thing I’ll say as part of my rant….

Every major speaker referred to John McCain as a good man… a patriot.. someone who cares about his country, etc. and etc..

Then they proceeded to state that aside from those facts, he is wrong on his positions, and then spelled out how..

You will NOT see that at the Republican convention. They will imply Obama is not patriotic. He doesn’t care about his country (only about his personal ego and agenda). They will tear him down, because that party has no way to win other than to deomonize the candidate on the other side. There is not a single policy of theirs the public would support in the majority over the Democratic position. And so, the only hope they have is to destroy the character of the other candidate. They did it to Gore. they did it to Kerry. And they have and will do it to Obama.

  8. Yes, and unfortunately, many in the public will buy into it because they don’t bother to really examine the facts or the motives behind it all.

Can you believe that FOX News (of course) Steve Doocy suggested that Palin has foreign policy credentials because…

“…she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia.”

Maybe if she stands next to McCain long enough, she’ll also attain POW experience.

AND…. she pronounces nuclear NOOKULAR… just like the idiot Bush – and, if you recall, like the dolt VP Dan Quayle. I can’t cope. I’m so sick of listening to leaders who have no grasp of the English language and don’t bother to THINK before they SPEAK.

WHY WOULD ANYONE VOTE FOR THESE PEOPLE???????

  9. Because they claim they are Christian and that Jesus is their hero. Because they are against abortion, against marriage equality, and against sex ed in the schools… Basically we are a nation full of theocrats who feel that it is not only okay for them to guide their own lives by their religious beliefs, but to control others’ lives by their religious beliefs. That one of the major parties has been hijacked by these nutcases is truly a danger to freedom and equality.

To answer your question with a single word..

    Religion..

  10. Thank you for the post. I have been watching the proceedings all weekend and just have a few thoughts.
    1. Obama must win. Period. His speech gave me goose pimples and made me proud to be American. Tim was completely against him and is quite the Republican, but as he was watching Obama’s historic speech he turned to me and said “I think he will win.” Obama’s speech changed my Republican husband’s opinion.
    2. Michelle is amazing, really amazing.
    3. I hate Fox.
    4. McCain is just silly really silly for picking Palin.
    5. Palin is way way way out of her league.
    6. Thank you McCain for picking her and giving the presidency to Obama.
    7. Cindeeee McCain and her designer dresses and ridiculously stupid comments cannot become our first lady. We have had 8 years of a woman who can’t think for herself and is, sorry a little simple. Cindeeee McCain makes Mrs. Bush look like a Rhodes Scholar.

I’m scared though, really scared that McCain “I love war” will win.
