Called to serve

We are less than one week from the inauguration of President Barack Obama  (I get goosebumps when I say that).  I can hardly wait!

I’ve been impressed with his transition so far, and am loving the tone he is setting. One of his mantras throughout the campaign was that WE can make a difference, WE can change things. If our nation, or society, the world are going to see positive change, WE need to be involved in it – not just leave it to the politicians.

National Day of ServiceIn honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, the Obama and Biden families will be participating in community service on Monday the 19th – and have asked the rest of us to join in on this national day of service on Monday.

All sorts of events being hosted – from litter cleanup, to boxing cans at food banks, to planting gardens, to donating blood, to making sandwiches, and more. I found several great options, but have settled on helping feed the homeless at Tent City 4 in Kirkland.

Are you going to participate?

  1. Hey, that’s a cool site! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been looking all over for something like this – it’s so nice to have it all mapped out for you and everything. Is this going to continue on after the 19th (I hope so), or is just a one time thing?

  2. That really is a cool site! What a wonderful idea. It would be fun to find something to do to participate!

  3. I want to hear about your experience at tent city. I will be watching the events on Tuesday all day long and I can’t wait!

  4. Aw, how nice. I hadn’t heard about it, but that is really great.

There is a poster of Obama on the wall in Kennedy’s school, and this morning when we walked passed it she said “Hey mom, look! It’s Obama! He’s our present!” (That will go on Kennedy-isms, don’t worry) 🙂

  5. Thanks Allison.. I found a food bank drive near me and I am going to participate. I had not heard of this event until now….

  6. That’s great, Jean! Come back and report on your experience.

Brandon, I know there are other sites out there that have volunteer opportunities, but on this particular site, in the FAQ, it says:

Q: Will there be opportunities to volunteer after MLK Day?

A: Yes, stay tuned. The goal is for MLK Day to reignite the American tradition of service and volunteerism and to that end the current call to action is viewed as a starting point. Details on how to stay active in the future will be coming soon.

Have you found an event that would work for your family hon Monday, Brandon?

  7. Thank you for the kind words and advice about my mom. I love that through blogging I have been able to make new friends. 🙂 It means a lot to me to know that you care!
