Happy (Belated) Birthday, Kathleen

Happy Birthday KathleenOne of these years, all of my piscean friends need to be together for our birthdays…    but for this year, at least, I was able to spend time with Kathleen on her day (which is the day after mine) and got her to sit for a photo.

She is so much fun.  Ashley, Kennedy and I stopped by with a small gift and Glaus French pastries (I have yet to find a comparable bakery in the Seattle area) and we had a great visit.  Especially Kennedy, to whom Kathy ALWAYS gives her personal attention.

Kathy and I spent a couple of days with each other the next week, dining, running errands, watching movies, shopping, laughing and just catching up.  It’s good to spend time with friends – and this is one I just don’t see often enough.   Thanks Kathy.  Can’t wait for your visit next in May!

A day in pictures

Yesterday, late morning, I looked out the window and noticed snow falling on my rock garden…

Garden - light snow
and here is what it looked like an hour later.
Snowy garden

This doesn’t happen very often, so I decided to take my camera out with me while I ran a few errands.

RainbowJust 2 weeks ago it was raining, and I ignored my inner photographer when it said – ah, take the camera.  About a mile from my house I came upon the biggest, brightest rainbow I had ever seen…. I snapped this shot through my windshield with my phone (totally doesn’t do it justice), but if I’d had my camera with me I’d have a frameable pic.  But I digress…

Here’s what I saw yesterday, all within a mile of my place…   Snow capped pansies and wetlands bathed in clouds and snowflakes.

Snow capped pansies tundra.jpg

Pink trees lining the streets and hidden away between evergreens.  And the trees are just starting to bloom.  So many varieties – we’ll have trees in bloom into May.  I love how long spring lasts here.

Pink trrees

And another wetland area.  It makes me sad to see development come along and cut down so many big trees.  I hope this wetland area will stay preserved (including it’s backdrop of evergreens) for a long time.

By evening, all the snow had melted.  Today the sun is shining.

Sexiest Man Alive

Matt Damon - NOT the sexiest man aliveEvery year People magazine chooses the sexiest man alive.  Sometimes I wholeheartedly agree (George Clooney – 1997 & 2006) – and others, it seems a bit of a miss (Nick Nolte – 1991).  This year their choice was Matt Damon.  Now, Matt is a handsome young buck and a terrific actor – but sexiest man alive??? I think not.

While in Salt Lake last week, Ashley, Kathleen and I took a stroll through the covers of all the previous years of Sexiest Man Alive issues and gave them our own 1 – 10 ratings (and for the most part, were in agreement).   As we were oggling the pics at People.com, we commented on how a person’s behavior impacts their sexiness.

  • George Clooney: humanitarian/political activist = sexy.
  • Brad Pitt: humanitarian = sexy.
  • Mel Gibson: anti-semetism = not sexy.
  • Sean Connery: wife beater = not sexy.

This year I have painstakingly reviewed potential candidates (it was quite a chore, as you can well imagine), and have selected my own honoree.

I present to you now my choice for the 2007 Sexiest Man Alive:

Shemar Moore

Gaze upon his countenance and drool.

Shemar Moore - Sexiest Man Alive

This man is simply gorgeous.

I don’t know much about him or his personality, but I’m a fan of his character on Criminal Minds.

At some point I may learn of some unsavory detail about his life that reduces his sexiness – but for now, this is my dream boy.

Who is your pick?

Happy Birthday, Buns

Michelle - 10th grade

Happy Birthday to my best friend, Michelle….

aka Honey, Goob, Shell, Shelly and Buns (nickname given to her by the neighborhood buys who appreciated her cute derriere).

We’ve been best friends since 9th grade (which is a lot longer ago that it feels) and some of my best memories, most embarrassing moments, and my greatest laughter, have been shared with her.

Happy Birthday MichelleShe’s smart, wickedly funny, talented, compassionate, a loyal friend, and looks as great today as she did 20 years ago.  Maybe even better.   Including her “buns.”  I’m jealous.

I don’t know why, but when we are together we are very different than when we are apart.   Something synergistic happens and creates a force to be reckoned with.  Together, we were (and are) nuts. Immune to peer pressure… or family pressure…. fashion sense or any other boundary.  We were good kids – but we truly didn’t care what anyone else thought of us when we were together.  We did the silliest, dumbest things – and kept ourselves laughing constantly.

Things I’d never do on my own.  I could write volumes about the pranks we pulled and things we did together….  Umbrella tree fiasco, belly button filters, pantomiming food while walking down the street, tea parties, prank phone calls to our classmates that led to their embarrassment in the classroom (that is my favorite)….

Some people were really annoyed with us, some jealous (we got away with a lot)… and there were a good many who just loved to be around us to see what would happen next.   I’m sure my siblings will concur….

I love that when we’re together EVERYTHING is funny.  We could look at a piece of toast and burst out laughing.   And Michelle is full of the best one liners… really very witty.   She kept me in stitches on our trip to Butchart Gardens last year.  And she’s good sport, not afraid of looking foolish or laugh at herself, and she’s willing to be poked fun of and accept teasing as good natured fun.   Thank you for letting me draw hats and faces on your toes.  Have I mentioned she is really funny?

A true friend – knows me well, all my faults, my embarrassing secrets, and more – and loves and accepts me as I am.  Doesn’t matter how much time has passed, when we connect it’s like we were together yesterday.  I hope we’ll be making a lot more memories together in the next phase of our lives….

Love you!   Hope your day is great!

All decked out for Easter Vine ladies

Signs of Spring

This one’s for you, Ashley.

Clematis budsIt’s been lovely, sunny weather the past few days in Seattle – which draws me to my little garden.  I’ve done a little weeding, trimming off dead branches and such, and joyfully discovered new growth from last years’ planting.  All three of my clematis vines have buds.

Sweet Woodruff
Look at the cute new growth on the sweet woodruff I planted among the rock wall. It’s sending out shoots and hopefully will fill in nicely last year. It’s such a cute plant, isn’t it?  Can’t wait for it’s beautiful white spring flowers to appear.

DelphiniumAnd look – even my delphinium is sprouting new growth…  you know how I love delphinium. Who am I kidding – I just love flowers! Next to the delphinium is a campanula (canterbury bells) that will grow tall with beautiful white, bell shaped flowers on it. I’ve had it in a pot for 4 years and it’s grown so much I divided it and planted it in three different areas. I’ve done that twice now since I bought it. I love perrenials.

Hardy GeraniumAnd here comes the hardy geranium. I have several of these – including one that has completely filled up a pot. I hope they get enough sun this year to flourish… against the rock wall is a bit shady.

Now, if only I could keep the stupid yard maintenance people from DIGGING UP MY PLANTS! My garden area is obviously well cared for…. it’s clear that these are wanted plants, rather than weeds. But 2 weeks ago, when I wasn’t looking, they dug up an expensive pink anenome that was LARGE. Left everything else, but they decided it must go. I tracked them down and begged them not to do that anymore. The head guy translated to the workers and told me they wouldn’t do it anymore.

Unfortunately, today while I was at the post office (why do they always come when I’m not here???) they came by and dug up 2 cute little plants that I’ve been so excited to see bloom. Idiots.

No Digging! So I made a sign for them and put it in the garden, held down with rocks telling them to STOP DIGGING MY PLANTS! Since most of them don’t speak English, I also included a “do not dig” sign that they SHOULD be able to understand. We’ll see if it helps. But I’ve been very annoyed about it all afternoon.

On a happier note, because of the temperate climate here, many “annuals” I neglected to dig up in the fall appear to have survived and will have a head start for summer.   And, of course, the forever blooming pansies that have provided happy color all through the winter are still thriving.  I’ll post a picture of them to take my mind of the random plant abduction by the maintenance crew.

Pansies

So, how is YOUR garden looking?

The joy of art

Dale Chihuly 2002 SLC OlympicsOne of the many things I love about living near Seattle is the vibrant art community – and particularly the abundant art glass found here.   I remember being fascinated and blown away by the exhibits of Dale Chihuly (yes, he’s from here) during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.

There are literally dozens of art glass studios as well as art institutes/schools here.  I wander through the galleries and shop which featuring local artists and am inspired, wishing I had the light, display space and money to create a gallery of these piece in my home…

Leaded Glass SnowflakeBlown glass, dichroic glass, leaded glass – jewelry, functional pieces and abstract art.  I’d surround myself with this beauty if I could.  Art is not cheap.

Over the past 4 1/2 years I have lived here (has it really been that long??) I have collected 4 stunning leaded glass snowflakes, created by Cheryl Parrott, and a couple of years ago received a fused/dichroic glass pendant from my cousin, Rob (I still love and wear it Rob!).

When Margie came to visit in October, I took her to a couple of my favorite local art shops where she, too, was astounded at the quality and quantity of local artistry.  I think she must have noticed my longing glances (or perhaps my pulling on her arm to “look at THAT!”) at some of the art glass, because her Christmas gift to me this year was sending me out to pick my favorite glass piece.

Selecting the perfect piece took repeat visits to several galleries – but one piece just kept calling me back.  When the owner said I could take it home and if it didn’t work, I could return it – I pulled out the American Express and she carefully wrapped it in bubble wrap.   Orange and and purple are not colors that will go with just any decor – but I had hopes that it would go in mine.   The moment it was unwrapped, I knew it would not be leaving my home – it’s PERFECT.

My art glass plate

It’s about 17″ across, and has a custom stand, and looks great in several places in my condo, but I decided it would make the ideal entry piece.  Not sure if you can tell in this photo, but it almost glows when the light hits it.  It sits right next to my front door – so I see it every time I leave my home, or walk down the hall to my bedroom.

Isn’t it beautiful?   Thanks Margie!

Do you have a favorite piece of art in your home?   Or art that you haven’t acquired but that continues to call to you?

Yes We Can

Have you seen this music video yet?  If not – watch and enjoy.
It’s really well done – and I love the message….

ABC first premiered the song, written/Produced by will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas (lyrics pretty much by Barack Obama) and Bob Dylan’s son, Jesse, and featuring Scarlett Johansson, John Legend, Herbie Hancock, Kate Walsh, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Adam Rodriquez, Kelly Hu, Amber Valetta and Nick Cannon and others.

Spread the word, spread the hope… and vote!

Creepy Commercial

Is anyone else creeped out by these Charles Schwab commercials?  Disturbing.  The animation just gives me the willies every time I see one – so much so that I had to blog about it. Lucky you. I can’t imagine this improving their business…

On the other hand, there are a handful of commercials out right now that always make me chuckle.  They’re stupid, but I always laugh.

One is the William Shatner as the Price Line Negotiator.  I love his horrible kung fu moves and that he can be such a dork and not take himself seriously.   I also find myself chuckling at the Emerald Nuts commercials…  the Swiss Family Robinson or the “Addicted To Love Girls” that appear at 3pm and mess with the person who’s sleeping because he didn’t eat the nuts to stay awake. Really dumb, but funny.

And lastly – for some reason I smile every time USA Network plays their promo for the upcoming Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. It has these dogs, photographed like models, with wind blowing on them (the Afghan hound is beautiful), etc. as “I’m Too Sexy” plays, or “She’s Like The Wind“….

Any standout commercials for you?

Sweetness, Farewell….

SweetnessAs you may recall, I adopted a kitty last August, and named him Sweetness.

He has been such a good cat – well behaved and very affectionate.  He’s a sweet, sweet boy who loves to cuddle… and to whom I have discovered I am very allergic.   Even though he isn’t allowed in my bedroom, I wash my hands after each cuddle, vacuum almost daily – my skin is not fooled.  It knows there is kitty dander in the air and has been reacting with itchy hives – on my face.    I will spare you any photographs of said hives.    So, as much as I have loved my time with Sweetness, I knew he needed a new home.

Today, he joined his new companion named Amy – who is excited to shower him with love.   Although I will miss him, I am happy for him.   Farewell, Sweetness… farewell.

Running with Scissors

Running With ScissorsIt’s not often that I regret taking time to read a book…  wishing that I’d never picked it up.  But such is the case with Augusten Burroughs’ memoir, Running with Scissors.

I’m not even sure where I got this book (if you gave it to me, let me know and I’ll be happy to return it to you), but I noticed it sitting on my desk about the time I was looking for some holiday reading material.  I seemed to recall previews for the movie – a scene with Gwyneth Paltrow and some kid knocking a hole in the ceiling to let in more light, and the dad thinking nothing of it….  and I thought it sounded kind of quirky, and decided to read the book.

I was NOT prepared for what lay in the pages.  Well written, yes.  Funny, at times.  Engaging – well, I did finish the book….  and then when I put it down, wished I hadn’t.  In fact, wished I’d never picked it up.    It was extremely disurbing, disgusting, crass, depressing and downright bizarre.    These are characters you’d expect to see shouting obscenities at each other on the Jerry Springer show.  While I’m all for finding the humor in any situation, these stories of abuse and mental illness were a bit graphic and disturbing for me to be able to enjoy them.      That this is a memoir is truly sad….   though a testement to the human spirit’s ability to be able to survive the most horrifying of childhoods.

I mentioned to Kathy that I reading it the other day, and she said “Oh – I started reading that and put it down half way through… and I rarely decide not to finish a book.  Just too disturbing.”   I wish I’d talked to her before I picked it up….

So that’s my review.  I give the book 1.5 stars out of 5.

On the other hand – I highly recommend Eat, Pray, Love and believe I’ll read it again.

Have you read this book and have a differing view?  Did you feel the same as me?   What books have you read, then wish you hadn’t?
