Move over, Braeburn

Move over, Braeburn, there’s a new apple in town. 

For several years, my favorite type of apple has been the Braeburn.  Sweet and tart, nice and crisp they’re wonderful when in season.  And, living in the beautiful state of Washington, I get them fresh and crisp every year.   But they haven’t shown up in stores yet (harvest is a bit later than usual due to a colder than usual spring/early summer).

Last week I wanted/needed some apples, and I’ve learned to just ask the nearest grocery department employee “So, what apples are best right now.”  And on this occasion, I was directed to an apple I’d never heard of before. 

They were $3.98 a lb – twice as much as any of the other apples – but he swore they were worth it.  And I’ve learned to trust these guys, after buying apples on my own that turned out to be a bit mushy.  Blech.  So I bought several and took them home.

Behold my new apple love…. The Honey Crisp.

  
The delicious Honey Crisp appleThis sweet little guy has a crisp “to-die-for” texture.  Nothing worse than a mushy apple. (Ok, there are worse things, but that’s beside the point).  And from what I’ve experienced and read, no other apple matches its crispness.

I finished off my first round and just bought 6 more… still at $3.98 per lb.  Worth every penny. Yum. I haven’t tried with caramel, but I bet they’d be delicious.

  1. Oh, man, these honey crisp apples put the Braeburns to shame! I went looking for them at my local story last week and there were none. So, I bought a few braeburns. They were okay. But, lucky me! When I went back to the store this week, they had some Honey Crisp. I nearly danced with joy.

    I think Craig wasn’t so sure these apples would be that much better than any others – at least not enough to do a dance over – but he now agrees… These are awesome apples. He has been enjoying them dipped in a little carmel. That does sound heavenly, doesn’t it?

    I’m so happy that young man at Central Market knew where to direct us, and gave us an apple so we could sample the goodness.

    I’ve had half an apple everyday since they showed up at my store. I will be sad when they go away.

  2. Oh yes – I forgot that he totally sold us on it by cutting one open and giving us each a couple of slices….. that’s something I just love about Central Market. They don’t even hesitate to let you taste the produce before buying. Last year I ended up buying and eating about 3 dozen mandarin oranges from Central Market during the holidays due to a sample I asked for….. I’m eagerly awaiting their arrival in November.

  3. These are indeed very good eating apples – and yes, very good in caramel. They’re vey much worth Kris’ apple joy dance! They’ve probably become my favorite eating apple. I haven’t cooked with them; traditionally for cooking (apple crisps and pies) I like Fuji and Rome apples.

  4. mmmmm. I’m going to have to try these. They sound delicious… I really like the Braeburn so I’m sure I will love the Honey Crisp. IF they’re available here…

  5. I have never heard of the honey crisp but you sure are making my mouth water. I have always loved green apples, have no idea the names.

  6. I love Braeburn apples, I’ll have to try Honey Crisp, certainly. I’m sure ours here in Phoenix may not be as fresh as the ones picked on trees right outside your supermarket. 🙁
