Ashley RaeMy daughter can sing.

No, I mean she can REALLY sing.

She performed in musicals in Jr. & High School – but since getting married hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to do so.

Her husband, Justin, is very passionate about music – plays bass and has been in several bands. He and Austin (along with other players who seem to come and go) are talented musicians who formed a band named Vicious Starfish a couple of years ago.  **They have recently renamed themselves The Black Arrows

Last summer they were listening to their recordings and realized they needed a new vocalist if they were going to take their music to the next level – leaving Austin to focus on songwriting rather than singing.

Ashley had done a little back up singing on some of their recordings in the past, so they asked her to audition… and were blown away, of course. (I’m her mother, I can brag)

So Ashley Rae is the new frontwoman for The Black Arrows.

Justin, Ashley & Austin - Viscious StarfishThey’ve been rehearsing and in the studio for months – and finally have a couple of tracks for their new album ready to be heard.

I think Austin is a very talented songwriter and I’m really enjoying their music.

Their first gig with Ashley as vocalist will be April 23rd at Liquid Joe’s in Salt Lake City. I wish I could be there!

Ashley is fabulous.

I am so glad they found out what she can do. There is so much she can do and all of it sounds great. I love Pandemonium, and Hypnosis is really starting to grow on me. I’ll be hearing these songs in my dreams.

You go, girl. You’re awesome.

michelle on February 5th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

You are right Allison, the girl can sing. Wow, what a great voice she has– and a beautiful face to go with it. I wish I could be there to hear her too! Maybe we should meet there for our birthdays?!

I really liked Pandemonium.

I think Ashley is amazing. I love her voice, it sounds natural, not like she’s straining herself. I think pandemonium would be my favorite too.

I loved pandemonium! Star quality. Just remember, I’m your uncle. Craigs response was, this sould have air time right now.

I guess I’m talking to Ashly directly. I got over excited.

Ashley Rae on February 5th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Oh mom, you are too kind. Thanks for bragging about me. Haha. I’m glad I’m finally able to having something fun that Justin and I can do together that we’re equally as passionate about 🙂

And as for the rest of you- seriously, thank you. I am SO glad you guys like the music!! Austin writes such catchy stuff. I’m sure if I wrote music it would be cheesy and girly- and definitely not as poetic. lol.

It looks like Pandemonium is winning the popularity contest- that one is actually my favorite out of the two, as well. (And if any of you were wondering, both songs are about religion- very interesting if you pay attention to the lyrics.)

Allison on February 5th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

I think Hypnosis is a more ‘interesting’ song – and extremely catchy. I like how it shows off different aspects of your voice. And I am always attracted to music in a minor key. Til you read me they lyrics I thought it was about sex 🙂 Actually it still could be… that’s one of the things I like about Austin’s lyrics – they have layers and meaning.

But Pandemonium shows off your range and the beauty of your voice and is fun and danceable. I’m enjoying listening to both of them over and over 🙂

I love that you’re singing again!

Ashley does have such a beautiful voice and she can sing all types of music. She is beautiful in side and out!!. My favorite is Pandemonium.

These are both very good! Ashley sounds great!

Hypnosis: I particularly like the contrast of Ashley’s voice over the “dirty” bass and the discord instrumental parts in the chorus. I think the bridge part of this song is very good – Ashley backing herself sounds great – and the transition to a more harmonious sound works very well there. This one is my favorite, though I can’t help but think how much better it’d be with a cleaner bass sound – but then I’m old and that electronic sound is more consistent with current musical interests.

Pandemonium: This one seems to me to show off Ashley’s voice a lot more, she really does sound great and she really nails what sounds like a difficult bridge part. I also like the way this song begins and ends with the bass – a clean bass, which I much prefer to the dirty, electrified sound of the bass in Hypnosis. I believe this is the one that will get into people’s heads, it’s catchy, it should be the single! (Do they still release singles like that?)

What he said.

Craig, you articulated my thoughts on Hypnosis much better than my “interesting” comment. Though the dirty base doesn’t bother me at all, it would be interesting to hear how it would sound with a cleaner bass.

Loved them both… will buy the album when it comes out. : )

Erica on February 10th, 2010 at 4:19 pm

This is so exciting! Tell them to book a gig in AZ so I can go!

Brandon Pearce on February 12th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Go Ashley! Nice to have a chance to show off your awesome voice. Nice photos, too – very hip wardrobe. Too hip for me, but you look cool in it.

Ken on April 14th, 2010 at 3:55 am

HYPNOSIS is definitely my favorite. Ashley sounds great! Are they going to tour to promote the CD?

Ashley Rae on April 14th, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Thanks Ken! I’m so glad you like the music. No tour is in the works, yet… but we’re not opposed to it 🙂
Right now we’re just booking local shows. We’ve been accepted to play in the Utah Arts Festival this year, so we’re pretty excited about that!

I am so lucky to have such a wonderful, talented, beautiful best friend. Although it is extremely hard to compete with that! :)I have had the cd in my player for a week now and am loving it!
