Dear Paul,

I realized today that I didn’t get a birthday card in the mail to you – which I had fully intended to do.  So, instead, this year you get an online birthday greeting. I have no baby pictures of you to share – but did come up with a couple of gems 🙂

Paul in 1981?So…  Happy birthday to one of my favorite people in the world – certainly my favorite former in-law.    I have so many fond memories of times spent with you – most of them filled with laughter and or witty/ironic observations about the insanity that surrounded us.

Thank you for giving me crazy perms and purple, red or blonde hair and making me feel beautiful even when I wasn’t.  Time spent in your salon chair was better than therapy.

Thanks for helping me survive the “Pearce years.”   For the listening ear, the commiserating, the humorous observation, support and the shoulder to cry on.

Thanks for taking me dancing when your brother wouldn’t.  Memories of our trips to the Sun still make me smile.

Thanks for being irreverent and snickering at the back of the room with me at those gawd-awful Christmas parties, where the entertainment was watching videos of the previous year’s entertainment.  I’m so glad I found myself among the troublemakers of the family… there weren’t many of us, but we banded together and had a good time 🙂

Paul in the early 90s?Thanks for being one of the few people to whom I could send a birthday card I got at Cahoots back in the 80s 🙂

Thanks for opening my eyes and completely shifting my perspective and view on being gay…. you were the first person I knew to come out – and, in that very moment, I realized that nearly everything I’d been taught about homosexuality was wrong. And I just keep thinking that if everyone could really know you, they’d all “get it…” and their eyes would be opened too!

And though we are no longer officially related, you feel like family to me… we’re now family by choice. I’m so glad that you finally got online so we could be in regular touch!

Craig & PaulYou are a bright light and always a joy to be around, Paul. I’m so delighted that you have found a place you love to live, and someone you adore to share your life with. May this year be the best yet.

And yes – I am still planning on coming for a visit before the year is over!

Happy birthday and love you!

P.S. Anyone else want to wish Paul a happy birthday or share a memory of him with us? 🙂

Happy Birthday Paul!!! I love you!!!! I too have wonderful memories of you. Thanks for being there for me when our world fell apart. For trying to explain what seemed like the inexplicable to a 17 year old. I remember going to the shop in Trolley Square and getting my nails done and talking about all the confusion and hurt. Thanks for taking good care of my mom and Annie through it all too. We love you!!!
I of course have great memories of all the fun times too! Many laughs and mucho sarcasm shared with my beloved cousin Paul!!
So Paul have an amazing birthday and know how much I love you!

Oh my favorite uncle 🙂 happy birthday!! I love you and I wish I saw you more frequently. You are such a great person.

Aunt Kathy on June 13th, 2009 at 11:07 am

Happy Birthday Paul! I love you too!
Thank you for still being part of my life. Thank you for being there for my girls when their father died and they were struggling to understand his death and the issues surrounding it. Thank you for making some of those family parties, camping trips and Sundays at grandma and grandpa”s fun and bearable.

Thank you for coming to the hospital and seeing your Uncle Tim and persuading me to leave with you to get my nails done (free of charge) because you wanted me to feel better about myself. Then you kept on doing my nails until I was back on my feet and could pay you, but true to your nature, you always gave me a generous discount.

I don’t want to embarrass you Paul, I just want everyone who reads this to know how very special you are.

I’m glad that you and Craig found each other and were able to marry, I’m glad that I got to spend time with Chris and Eric when they were small, just wish I could see more of them now. And you and Craig of course.

Remember that big, old pink Cadillac convertible you had? How you would pick up my kids in that thing and take them to the zoo when they were quite small?
Remember when you dyed my hair pink? We had fun didn’t we? Remember when Joe was riding his bike outside your house, when he fell and you ran into the house to tell us. You were upset, when your mom asked if Joe had hurt himself you replied in a very frustrated voice, “I DON’T KNOW, but he’s squashed ALL THE TULIPS!!!!!” You did share your Grandpa Arvae’s love of flowers and gardening. In short Paul, Thank you for being YOU! Have a wonderful day. xxx

Happy Birthday, Paul. I hope your day and this coming year are both wonderful. My best memory of you is dancing with you at The Sun. You made it such a blast!

Jeeeezzz Allison…thanks for posting that picture of my husband that is the exact likeness of Napolean Dynamite’s swishy brother. Isn’t he the cutest!

After reading all your posts so far and tearing up each time it makes me wish that I had known my husband even more than the last 14 years. I’ve always told him I thought he was one of the best dads I’ve known – watching how he is with his boys. And hearing stories about him when he was even younger make me love him even more. I’m sure you are all jealous that I get him in the present every day of my life. Back off all of you…he’s mine.

Just kidding – I’ll share.

Allison – thanks for this post. I’m guessing this is one of the best birthday presents he’s ever received. Sort of makes the new toaster oven I got him seem sort of lame…

I’m glad you’re all in our lives via the blogs. Hope to see and and all of you soon.

craig on June 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm

that should have said – hope to see any and all of you soon.

and…I concur with all your comments about how Paul’s “being there” at the right time with the right words or advice or shoulder…he’s the best.

I am speachless, sort of. Allison, what a wonderful birthday preasent. Best ever. It’s like being at your own funeral. Such nice words and memories from all. I’m typing through tears. So touched. Amy, you must have blocked out the time I spanked you for squirting me with the hose. Thank you for your comments. Aunt Kathy, I dont know if you knew in what danger your kids were in when we drove around in the pink convertible. We over heated just as we got to the zoo, and had to refill the radiator and hope that we would make it home. Allison, I was blown away when you said “if everyone knew me they’d all get it. Wow! I love you all. Thankyou so much.

Kathleen on June 13th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

I’d love to Paul but I don’t own a sander. xxxxx

LOL to the wrong date. I knew your birthday was sometime mid-June… could never remember if it’s the 13th (Mark is the 13th of Dec) or the 17th. I’ll make note now… and I’ll actually get that card in the mail to you!

Paul, you deserve every bit of praise you receive – you truly are one in a million and I have always felt blessed and honored to have you in my life.

Kathleen on June 13th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Paul: What Allison said. Oh Craig, Napoleon Dynamite’s brother that’s so funny, and you are very lucky to have Paul, but then I’m sure he feels lucky to have you.

craig on June 13th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

It’s OK Kathy – I’ll sand something for him. LOLOL

Andrea Pearce on June 14th, 2009 at 10:12 am

Happy birthday Papa!!!! We love you soooo much!
My favorite part was also the “if they knew you they would get it” part. So true Dad. I have loved you and Craig for so many years. I am proud to be your daughter. We will see you soon!!!

Andrea Pearce on June 14th, 2009 at 10:13 am

OK, I know that he is a baby in the picture but my husband is hot!!! Well he was just super cute back then, but still!!!

Amy on June 17th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

oh Paul! So that’s where my spanking fetish started…

Brandon on June 13th, 2012 at 2:55 am

Happy Birthday Paul! I’m a couple years late commenting on this post, but it’s been great getting to know you through your blog and I wish I had more of a chance to spend time with you in person.

My memories of you as a child were just of how “cool” you were and it seemed like you always knew what to say and how to make people laugh. For example, when I was 12 or so, right after my voice started changing, I saw you at a family party for the first time in quite a while and said, “Hi Paul” in a deep voice. Then you mimicked me in an equally deep voice, saying, “Hi Brandon.” And I realized you’d caught me in trying to show off my maturity. lol. Oops.

Hope your birthday this year is the best ever! Love you!

paul on June 14th, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Thanks Brandon The getting to know you thing is totally mutual. I’m really enjoying following you and your families adventures. I really like being your Uncle.
