Johnny was robbed

First, big congratulations to American Evan Lysacek for winning the Olympic Gold Medal in mens figure skating. His skating was beautiful and the medal was well deserved.

jw1However, Johnny Weir was robbed.

Although not as technically advanced as Evan or Plushenko, Johnny’s performance was by far my favorite of the evening.

It was nearly flawless – and was the most artistic and moving of any of the skaters. His music choice was perfect. His costume was beautiful.

His program was personal – titled “Fallen Angel” to represent his personal journey through skating.

I was simply appalled at the low marks he received both for his short program (watch here) and for his even more amazing free skate tonight (hopefully video will be posted soon). I think he deserved the bronze medal.

I have to wonder how much the judges let his his outrageous personality (I love that he is always ‘himself’ – including wearing a hat of red roses while awaiting his marks) factored into their scoring.

Did you watch men’s figure skating? What were your favorite performances?  And what did you think of the results?

While you’re considering your answer, here are a few fun Johnny Weir facts:

  • He’s kind of a big fan of Russia. And “kind of” is a colossal understatement.
  • Watching Oksana Baiul in the 1994 Olympics inspired him to try figure skating. (He found Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan “terribly boring.”)
  • He started skating on a cornfield.
  • He landed an axel in his first skating lesson (a jump that typically takes skaters a few years to master).
  • He designs many of his own costumes – and wants to launch a career in fashion.
  • He’d also like to try his hand at politics as an ambassador to South Korea or Russia.
  • He brought a poster of Lady Gaga with him to the Olympic Village so that she “could watch over us”. LOL.
  • He also brought along pink bathmats.

Glitter and Be Gay

Even if you’re not a fan of opera, operetta or classical singing, I hope you’ll enjoy this hysterical (and beautiful) rendition of Glitter and Be Gay from the operetta “Candide” by Leonard Bernstein. It’s a very difficult piece to sing, and is performed by the adorable Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the role of Glinda the Good witch in Wicked. She is an amazing coloratura soprano with a gift for comedy. This has to be one of my all time favorite musical theatre/operetta performances. Watch it while you can (before it gets removed from YouTube again).

Colbert on Mormon Church Trespassing

As only he can, Stephen Colbert gives the Report treatment to the detention by Mormon church security of a gay couple after they shared a kiss on the cheek while walking through the plaza.

Enjoy.  Unless you’re LDS and homophobic… then I advise you to NOT watch 🙂

Write up in the SL Tribune indicates the show got permission from the church to film on the property…. but they didn’t specify they’d be shooting a parody of the “kiss incident”…

8: The Mormon Proposition

Last night I was going to post a video showing idiot Glenn Beck comparing volunteerism to Maoism (this guy is such a moron), but decided I didn’t want to give him any voice on my blog.

Instead, I am giving voice to a newly released trailer for an upcoming film about the ballot initiative that eliminated same-sex couples’ right to marry in California.

8: The Mormon Proposition chronicles the religious beliefs and financial contributions that fueled Prop. 8, and it captures the national response that protested the measure. The producer was a journalist in 2008 who did a lot of coverage of Prop 8. When he left his news agency, he began working with the crew that made this documentary.

It makes me sad and angry all over again. But hopeful that change will still come – that compassion, a sense of fair play, and recognition of civil rights will win out.

And if you supported Prop 8, I really don’t want to know about it…. (unless you’re sorry now 🙂 ).

The documentary has been submitted to Sundance and other film festivals. You can read about the film and it’s makers here and read a blog by the director here.
